Cruising the Mediterranean with MSC Cruises means coming within reach of the best in culture, tradition and monuments that have for centuries enriched its shores.
Visit these countries and learn about their rich Mediterranean history just like ancient mariners did as they sailed from Italy to the Greek Islands.
During the 18th-century, Mykonos’ maze of tangled lanes would confuse even the most well-travelled pirates. Nowadays pretending to get lost in these winding alleys makes for a day of entertainment! This destination is known for its romantic Greek Island glamour. See brilliant beaches, turquoise waters, and picturesque whitewashed villages.
A gem of the Cyclades archipelago, Mykonos draws visitors from all over the world. Explore whitewashed houses on narrow streets, a labyrinth built to thwart pirate attacks! Then, visit the world-famous Venetian windmills which date back to the 16th century. Used to grind wheat, these rustic structures were a fundamental part of the island’s former economy. Today, they provide a great photo opportunity, so remember to bring your camera!

A witness to some of the world’s most powerful empires, including Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman, Turkey is abundant with ancient relics and UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s a country renowned for its sweeping ocean vistas, bustling souks, archaeological wonders, and stark Saharan landscapes.
Kusadasi and Ephesus, two of its seaside towns, are both an MSC Mediterranean Cruises destination — one a glamorous beach resort overlooking the glittering Aegean Sea, the other an age-old commercial centre full of captivating antiquities.
Not far from modern-day Selcuk lies ancient Ephesus, a city that’s peppered with romantic remains spanning classical Greece to the Roman Empire. Spend the day admiring artifacts in the Archaeological Museum, cast your gaze over the countryside from Ayasuluk Fortress, soak up the sun at the Great Theatre, or marvel at one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the majestic Temple of Artemis.

It’s easy to understand why Marmaris’ history has been determined above all by its stunning setting, in a deep, fjord-like inlet surrounded by pine-cloaked hills.
This did not seem to spur ancient Physcus, the original Dorian colony, to any growth or importance, but Süleyman comfortably assembled an army here in 1522, when launching its successful siege of Rhodes.
Shortly after this campaign Süleyman endowed the old town nucleus with the tiny castle and a inn. Little is left of the sleepy fishing village Marmaris used to be, a mere three decades ago. Development has dwarfed the old core of shops and lokantas lining narrow, bazaar-like streets, an intricate warren contrasting strongly with the European-style marina and waterfront. According to legend, Marmaris was named when Süleyman the Magnificent, not finding the castle here to his liking, was heard to mutter “Mimarı as” (“hang the architect”). The castle itself holds a museum of local finds and serves as a venue during the May festival.
The bazaar, including its diminutive
kervansaray, now rivals that at Kuşadası for its array of glitzy kitsch, and only the Kaleiçi district, the warren of streets at the base of the tiny castle, offers a pleasant wander.

Crammed with ancient architecture, cathedrals and churches, it’s no wonder the Historic Centre of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dip into it all on a Naples cruise, starting with a visit to medieval Castel Nuovo and its view to Mount Vesuvius, looming over the Bay of Naples.
Afterwards, be swept up in the busy streets of Spaccanapoli, lined with artisan workshops, before delving into the city’s past in underground catacombs, located in Rione Sanità. Visit world-famous museums, such as the Capodimonte, with its collections of Baroque and Renaissance art, including works by Titian and Caravaggio. And then there’s the food, from Neapolitan pizza to fine dining.
Better yet, combine your Naples cruise with an excursion to Pompeii, the archaeological site that lay buried for 1,700 years following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.Today, visitors can walk the cobbled streets and admire the mosaics adorning the villas of the town’s wealthiest families.
